Stopped Valproate because I was told it makes you gain weight?

Metabolism

I put on a large amount of weight taking Seroquel & olanzapine. I’ve been on Sodium Valproate (epilim) since then, and it made me so much happier that I was able to lose 24lbs in the last 2mnths. A friend told me last week, that my body would get used to the valproate, & I’d put on weight, so I stopped. I’m more ‘down’ now & want to spend all day in bed; don’t want to exercise. I also tend to eat more when unhappy, so feel valproate was better. Do you always gain weight on it? How come I was losing on it, due to being happy, if it affects metabolism?

Weight gain by medication is not an exact science. It sounds like in your case what happened is a natural reaction to food stimulants around you.

For example, you just said when you’re depressed you eat more. That could be the reason why you gain weight, and when you’re on the medication, you don’t gain weight because you’re happy and stop eating when you’re full and only eat when you’re hungry.

  2. you choose to stop taking SV even though you’d been loosing weight just because your friend said people gain weight on it!
everyone is different, you might not gain weight, esp’ as you were loosing weight already.
maybe you will gain weight later, but you can always stop it then if you want to.
no need to stop taking it now.

depression can cause an increase in appetite.
you said SV was helping your mood and helping you loose weight…it sounds good for you.

the fact you lost weight on SV could be due to your mood lifting or even the effects of the drug itself.
    everyone is different.

  3. Start your day right. Mothers always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Have a healthy meal in the morning to jump-start your metabolism.Drink lots of water. Your body needs sufficient water to burn fat and keep your cells hydrated and healthy.Watch your fat intake.Fat is not the culprit to being overweight. You need this to keep your weight at the proper level.

Here’s some other quick tips for you:

    * Stuff vegetables like capsicum and zucchini with flavored fillings or minced chicken, white meat or fish. These are healthy and contain low fat.

    * Learn how to make the family favorite recipes and make sure that fats, salt, and sugar are cut out. Substitute non-fat yogurt for cream, stir-fry without oil and use herbs and spices instead of salt to taste.

    * As much as possible do not remove the skins of fruits and vegetables since most of the nutrients are concentrated under the skin.

    * Look for a weight loss "buddy," club, or support mates. This will motivate you to stay and enjoy your weight loss program.

    * Try making omelettes without adding the yolks! A dramatic decrease in fat.

If you have started losing weight, just remember it’s a question of will. Keep doing what your’re doing, stay away from junk food and sodas, and you will feel more healthier and alive than never before.
