As a personal trainer in Scottsdale, one of the most common questions is: "How can I increase my metabolism?" Usually followed by "I a very difficult time losing fat, even with diet and exercise. I have a slow metabolism.

Sometimes it's not your metabolism at all, but rather an underestimation of caloric intake or an overestimation of calories burned during exercise. When our metabolism is working properly, eat, digest and absorb. The nutrients enter cells. Then we use the nutrients to produce energy.

Your diet affects the metabolism

The raw material for metabolism comes from your diet. And therein lies the rub: If you eat food of poor quality, lower metabolism.

For example, man trans fats are absorbed by the body as natural fats. But unlike natural fats, the body has no enzyme to break down fats hydrogenated below. Thus, they can not be used as fuel, the body incorporates the trans fats in the cell walls. Without going too far in biology cell, this makes the cells become less efficient at acquiring and burning fuel. The end result is slow metabolism.

Another structure cell that can be damaged is the mitochondria. The mitochondria within each cell are responsible for the burning of fuels for energy. When these are damaged cells, metabolism slows down. It is believed that excess free radicals cause mitochondrial damage. This happens when too few antioxidants available. Antioxidants protect the body of these potentially harmful byproducts of metabolism known as free radicals. The body works in a way that takes these antioxidants will be present, but with our modern diets, often this is rarely the case. And it's not only the quality of the mitochondria, but also the amount that influence cellular metabolism. The most a person's mitochondria within their cells, the faster your metabolism. And while the health of existing mitochondria is partly determined by the nutrition, the number of mitochondria of the cell is largely determined by lifestyle. The good news is that you can increase the number of mitochondria through the specific exercise. That is where the assistance of a personal trainer in Scottsdale is useful.

"So, what can I do to increase my metabolism?

Increase my metabolism Step # 1: Do cardio exercise

Exercise increases your body's levels of mitochondria. This increases the oxygen capacity of your body. This capability is often referred to as the V02. One of the best ways to do this is cardiovascular exercise as running, cycling, swimming. As a personal trainer in Scottsdale, I also recommend certain types of circuit training to resistance.

Perhaps the most effective exercise for the rapid construction of a faster metabolism is high intensity intervals. This technique consists of alternating short period maximum effort, about the periods of partial recovery, or reduction of effort. Using running on a treadmill as an example, take 1-minute average speed high and then 1-2 mins at a moderate pace or jog. The training will alternate those 10 or 20 minutes depending on skill level. I generally recommend at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity, 4 days week.
