resting metabolism calculator

Your Basal Metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns a day while in a resting state. Your Basal Metabolic Rate is a function of your Gender, Age, Height, and Weight. This number is essentially the number of calories that you would burn if you did nothing but sit on the couch and watch TV all day. Generally speaking, If you are a Male, your BMR will be higher than a Female’s BMR. Also, being younger, heavier, and/or taller will increase your BMR.

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is an important weight loss metric for two main reasons.

First of all, if you eat fewer calories than your BMR then your body will stop functioning properly and it will start to horde fat for later. This is what is commonly referred to as going into “starvation mode”. When your body goes into starvation mode you can look forward to lower energy, slower fat metabolism, and physical fatigue. Some people think that they need to eat as few calories as possible to lose weight. In actuality, you should aim for your BMR or just above, or else you will quickly go into starvation mode.

The Second reason why you want to understand what your BMR is that you can use your BMR to estimate the number of calories you are burning a day. You can multiply your BMR by a level of activity multiplier which will quite accurately estimate the number of calories you burn in a day. For example, if you have an office job and don’t work out, you only burn about 1.2 times your BMR. If you work out about 3 times a week, you burn about 1.55 times your BMR. Once you understand how many calories you burn in a day, you can plan your diet to help you reach your fitness goals.

If you want to lose weight, you need to plan on eating a number of calories that is somewhere between your BMR and the total number of calories you burn in a day. If you want to gain weight, you need to eat more calories than you burn in a day.
